The MEDIUMS

Medium-sized dogs, the MEDIUMS, are those whose adult weight ranges from 11 to 25 kg. Brittany, Beagle, English Cocker Spaniel, French Bulldog... These utility and companion dogs account for nearly one third of the breeds recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Hunting dogs, herd dogs, guard dogs, sled dogs... Most of these MEDIUMS are utility dogs recognized for their bravery, their dynamism and their physical ability to work outdoors. They have the ability to make intense efforts, but nowadays they sometimes experience a more urban lifestyle. Nevertheless, they remain active dogs. Even though their growth may be qualified as intermediate compared with that of small-sized dogs (the MINIS whose growth is rapid) or that of large-sized dogs (the MAXIS whose growth extends over almost their first two years of life), the period during which the MEDIUMS’ body is being built is crucial.

An immunological fragility

During the first weeks of their lives, MEDIUM puppies gain 5 to 10% of their weight every day and experience a gradual dietary change so as to switch from a liquid lacteal diet to solid food. Weaning starts around the 3rd week of age, preferably with the rehydrated food which is given to the mother during her lactation period and which is perfectly suited to them. Kibbles are progressively used dry to reach the end of weaning around the 7th week of age. Between the 4th and the 12th week of age, the puppy is to go through a risk period in terms of immunity. The immunity passed on by his mother via colostrum decreases progressively, although his own defenses are not optimal. They’ll be so only after the vaccine boosters are given. A Health Nutrition* food suited to the puppy’s growth from weaning through 12 months of age contributes to supporting natural defenses through specific nutrient intakes.

For harmonious growth in 12 months

From birth through 12 months of age, the puppy is going to multiply his weight by 40 to 50. His metabolism requires twice higher energy intakes than those of an adult dog, even though his digestive system is still immature. A Health Nutrition growth food should supply this energy without representing too large a volume in the stomach, while promoting a good digestive tolerance. Maximum digestive safety is achieved with high-quality protein and a dietary fiber profile favoring a good balance of the intestinal flora. Controlled calcium and phosphorus intakes enable to contribute to a strong skeletal development.

According to the breed, the Health Nutrition growth food for MEDIUM puppies should be used until 12 to 14 months of age.
